What is a character questionnaire?

A character questionnaire is set of questions that allows an author to get to know their characters and to build richer, more well-rounded, more REAL characters.

At its core, a character questionnaire encourages a writer to think about their characters in a different way—to consider aspects of their personality, appearance, or backstory that may not have occurred to them before. The character questionnaire can help an author figure out what is driving a character’s actions, and can even help an author to find a character’s voice.

When to use a character questionnaire

Character questionnaires typically get used even before the writing has begun. Much like a story is first outlined to find the essential elements of the plot, a character questionnaire allows an author to outline their characters, to find their essential elements.

How to use a character questionnaire

Consider a character questionnaire a kind of interview. You as the author are not answering the questions—your characters are. So try to answer in their voice. Be as genuine as you can in the responses, even if the answers are sometimes uncomfortable. And remember, not every question will apply to every character or to every genre of book. A children’s book protagonist likely won’t have any dark secrets or a hidden past, but the prime suspect in a mystery novel might! Have a read through the questions below and allow your characters to answer the ones that feel right. You might choose to do this in one sitting, or over time.

There is no wrong or right way to use the questionnaire, so long as you do not let it become a source of stress that bogs down the writing process. If it’s not the right tool for you, then stop. A character questionnaire is meant to move story writing along, not hinder the process.
